Swaziland: HIV infection higher among circumcised men - Survey

A study has shown that circumcised men have a higher HIV infection rate than uncircumcised men since 2007 when the Government of Swaziland introduced a policy on male circumcision, APA reports.
The study availed to APA Sunday morning states that out of the 305 circumcised men who were interviewed 21.8 percent were HIV positive compared to the 19.5 percent of uncircumcised men who were also interviewed and tested.

AIDS activist Vusi Matsebula told local media that most circumcised men are infected with HIV because of their behavior as they fail to use protection after undergoing the procedure because they believe circumcision is a preventive measure.

An official of Population Services International (PSI), Mandla Matsebula said; "The survey was conducted before the circumcision campaign was intensified. If they could conduct another survey now the results would be totally different."

Male circumcision, which is offered for free in Swaziland's public hospitals, was introduced as a measure to minimize chances of infection by about 60 percent.

During school holidays the campaign gains momentum as male pupils are often the main targets for the free procedure funded by the government.

So, circumcision status is the independent variable (two levels) and HIV status is the dependent (nominal). If they provided the raw data (there's not that much), a person could do his own means testing, probably a Mann Whitney U. Without that, it's not clear that there's any significant difference between the means here.

Then, of course, there's no methodological discussion in the article, so we have no idea what population is represented (if any) by the sample. Internal validity is also at issue - for example, is there a tendency to lie on the survey?

Another question is - how many (if any) of the HIV+ subjects were circumcised after they were infected?

Oh you noticed that?

Here's what you didn't notice before you rushed to post this crap as if it's some finding worthy of note:

There is no source for the original publication, if any, of this alleged research.
There are no authors named so no means to evaluate their expertise, if any.
There is not just "no methodological discussion in the article" -- there is NO mention of any methods at all!

In short we don't know ANYTHING about this supposed study of 305 men that you are so ludicrously trying to analyze in your usual pompous manner.

Now let's look at what informed people DO know about HIV and circumcision status in Swaziland. ( "Informed people" doesn't include you Jack. All you know about is that you'd like another drink, right?)

According to properly researched Swaziland government statistics, the HIV rate for circumcised men is 16.4 percent and for uncircumcised men it is 25 percent. That striking difference is not surprising given our knowledge of the role of foreskins in HIV transmission.(www.k4health.org/sites/default/files/SHIMS_Report.pdf)

If you're ever sober enough Jack, try reading the report....You night realize how you've shown yourself (again) to be a low-intellect, low-information jackass!

Thanks Parker for revealing that when Jack isn't in this group bullying and sneering at women he sneaks off to a self-pity group where he whines endlessly about how awful his life is. I checked it out and and this whine is typical:

I live in a basement apartment with no furniture except a folding chair and a mattress on the floor. During the day I sit in the chair waiting for night at which point I lay on the mattress. I have no job and I never do anything except drink vodka from a styrofoam cup."

.......

Quite an energetic personal attack considering that all I did was post an article. I worry about you, Uck. Remember your blood pressure.

You'll be happy to know that my domestic conditions have improved. The neighbors allow me mow their lawns and with the money they pay me for that service, I was able to upgrade both my folding chair and my styrofoam cup.
